Manga Fight Scene: 6 Panels in 2 Minutes – Animation Praised

Animators are praising the detail and pacing in a recent fight scene for an unnamed anime, with one online comment noting that six manga panels were expanded into a two-minute sequence. The observation, posted on social media, has sparked discussion about the workload and creative freedom afforded to animators at Studio MAPPA.

Founded in June 2011 by Masao Maruyama following his departure from Madhouse, MAPPA (Maruyama Animation Produce Project Association) has quickly become a prominent force in the Japanese animation industry. The studio currently operates studios in Tokyo, Osaka, and Sendai, employing 467 people as of April 2025, according to the company.

While MAPPA’s output is lauded for its quality, recent claims have surfaced regarding animator compensation. In response to allegations of underpayment, MAPPA stated it does not offer “unreasonable compensation” to its creators. However, animator Ippei Ichii publicly claimed that a Netflix-produced anime through MAPPA offered a rate of ¥3,800 per cut, a figure Ichii argued is significantly below the minimum acceptable standard of ¥15,000 per cut.

MAPPA’s structure includes a Production Division responsible for managing all aspects of animation creation, from budgeting and scheduling to staff recruitment and final delivery. The studio also houses a large CGI Division, with over 160 members specializing in digital processes like 3DCG, background art, and compositing. A Rights & Licensing Division focuses on global distribution and business development, while an Administration Division provides operational support.

The studio’s vision, as stated on its official website, is to create anime that resonates deeply with viewers, aiming for works that fans will revisit repeatedly. MAPPA intends to deliver high-quality animation globally and be regarded highly as a business entity.

Masao Maruyama stepped down as president in 2016 to form Studio M2, and was replaced by Manabu Ootsuka, a former employee of Studio 4°C. MAPPA continues to produce a range of anime series and films, but has not responded to requests for comment regarding the recent animator compensation claims or the specific fight scene that prompted the online discussion.
