Manchester United secured a narrow 3-2 victory over Burnley at Old Trafford, but the win was overshadowed by continued concerns surrounding the performance of the team’s goalkeepers under manager Ruben Amorim.
The result, while providing a vital three points, does little to quell anxieties about defensive vulnerabilities, particularly in goal, which have already contributed to damaging results against Arsenal and Grimsby Town. Amorim acknowledged the arduous circumstances facing his goalkeepers, hinting at a wider issue impacting the squad’s confidence.
United’s recent struggles began on the opening weekend with a defeat against Arsenal, a game where Altay Bayindir‘s inability to clear Declan rice’s corner directly led to a goal. Midweek brought a shocking loss to fourth-tier Grimsby Town, following Andre onana’s failure to deal with a corner, resulting in a second goal for the hosts.
The goalkeeping issues resurfaced against Burnley. Bayindir, returning to the starting lineup, failed to secure Loum Tchaouna’s second-half shot, allowing the ball to fall to Jaidon Anthony, who scored with the aid of two deflections to level the score at 2-2.
“I think it is hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment,” Amorim stated after the match. “They are humans. At Manchester United, everything is in the news.”
Amorim continued, “Everybody talks about the goalkeeper. I can change the goalkeeper and situations happen. We are in that moment. The players are struggling a little bit with all the things around the club. That is normal. It’s not just the goalkeepers.I think everybody has to improve.”
Amorim revealed the team is currently in a precarious position, stating, “We are in a moment where, with every possession near our box, they can score.”
