Man Utd chiefs agree to keep Michael Carrick in charge after Roma win
Roma Comeback Halts Winless Run
Matheus Cunha scored twice and was sent off late in the fixture to seal the victory on November 3, ending a disastrous stretch of nine matches without a win across all competitions. That run stood as United’s longest winless streak since the 1988-89 season. Roma had initially raced to a 2-0 lead within 17 minutes following an early strike from Matias Soule and a Donyell Malen penalty. Bruno Fernandes halved the deficit shortly after half-time before Cunha struck twice to salvage the result.
Despite the dramatic European turnaround, United languish in 17th place in the Premier League table, sitting outside the relegation zone only on goal difference.

Club Chiefs Decided to Keep Carrick in Charge
Manchester United’s hierarchy held crisis talks at Carrington following a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth in early October. Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox evaluated potential replacements at the time, keeping figures such as Unai Emery, Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann, and Antonio Conte under consideration. However, the club opted against an immediate dismissal, allowing Carrick to remain in charge for a subsequent defeat against Chelsea and the midweek triumph over Roma.
According to The Athletic, club chiefs agreed last week to keep Carrick in post for both the Roma fixture and the Premier League home match against Aston Villa before reviewing the position during the international break. Sky Sports reported that United do not plan to appoint an interim head coach if they ultimately decide to make a change.
Complicating potential succession plans, Aston Villa announced they are close to agreeing a new long-term contract with Unai Emery, dealing a blow to United’s list of long-term targets. Sky Sports added that United’s leadership retains lingering concerns over squad consistency and the chaotic nature of recent performances, noting that the preferred outcome across all levels of the club remains an upturn in results under Carrick.
Upcoming Fixtures Before the Break
Carrick prepares his squad to face Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday, November 8, before domestic football pauses for the international break. Defender Diogo Dalot expressed hope that the midweek momentum could transform their season. Meanwhile, squad fitness issues continue to mount after Carlos Baleba sustained a hamstring injury during the victory over Roma.
#mufc bosses want Carrick to succeed, but are planning for if he doesnât. Emery staying at #avfc is a blow because he was high on MUFC list of possibles, but always v difficult to get out of Villa. Whatever happens, another interim is v unlikely. https://t.co/b1Kp5N1wOD

Some canât differentiate between supporting and backing amid the Carrick impasse. #mufc supporters rightly hold him in such high regard they donât want to – and shouldnât have to – resort to booing. Few are outright saying he should still be in charge, thoughâŚ
