Man Utd 2-1 Crystal Palace: Fernandes Penalty & Sesko Strike Secure Carrick’s Win

A banner reading “MUFC Proudly Colonised by Immigrants” was unfurled in the Stretford End at Old Trafford on Sunday as Manchester United defeated Crystal Palace 2-1, a display widely interpreted as a direct response to recent controversial comments made by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The protest unfolded after a listless first half for United, during which they trailed 1-0 following a fourth-minute header from Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix. The comeback began eleven minutes into the second half with a penalty awarded after a VAR review determined Lacroix had fouled Matheus Cunha, with Bruno Fernandes converting the spot-kick.

Fernandes, speaking after the match, described a playful exchange with former teammate and Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson before taking the penalty. “He even told me at the end that he wanted to go to the same side as he did last week [when stopping Tolu Arokodare’s kick for Wolves] and save it. Lucky, he went to the other side,” Fernandes said.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner disputed the penalty decision, attributing it to “the Old Trafford bounce” and arguing the foul occurred outside the penalty area. “This proves decisive when you are 1-0 up and then concede a penalty and then have one player less,” Glasner stated. “The foul was outside the box and should be given where it starts. Matheus Cunha was very clever.”

United completed the turnaround when Benjamin Sesko scored his ninth goal for the club, and seventh in his last eight appearances, following a weak clearance from Palace. The goal came after a brighter spell for United following a halftime team talk from interim manager Michael Carrick.

Carrick praised Sesko’s recent form, explaining his inclusion in the starting lineup was not a difficult decision. “Benjamin is in a good place and he has had a major impact in recent weeks,” Carrick said.

The victory lifts Manchester United to third in the Premier League table on goal difference, having secured 19 points from a possible 21 under Carrick’s leadership. The team’s improvement marks a significant shift from last season’s 15th-place finish. Carrick, however, downplayed the significance of their current position. “It doesn’t mean an awful lot at the moment. We want to keep progressing,” he said.

The match was also marked by substitutions due to illness, with Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire both being replaced during the game. Noussair Mazraoui came on for Shaw in the 23rd minute.

The display of support for immigration by United fans follows an apology from Sir Jim Ratcliffe for describing the United Kingdom as being “colonised by immigrants.” Ratcliffe, who acquired a minority stake in Manchester United earlier this year, stated he wanted an “open debate” on issues of migration, skills and investment, according to the BBC. The apology, however, has been described as “half-hearted” by some observers.

Ratcliffe’s comments and the subsequent fan response highlight ongoing tensions surrounding immigration policy and its impact on British society. The industrialist’s wealth stems from the chemicals giant Ineos, with a net worth estimated at £17 billion, according to the Sunday Times Rich List.
