According to the Navajo Police Department, officers within the Window Rock district received an emergency call at approximately 1 p.m. local time on Thursday, August 21, 2026. The call reported that a bear had attacked a man in the small community of Crystal, situated in western New Mexico near the Arizona state line and north of Window Rock.
Navajo investigators and tribal fish and wildlife officers responded to the scene. Upon locating the animal, officials shot and wounded the bear, which initially fled into nearby woods. Search efforts continued until the animal was located and neutralized by authorities. The victim succumbed to his injuries.
