Man Jailed Over Years of Cruelty to Six Children, Including Freezer Torture

March 24, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

A Dublin man has been sentenced to nine years and two months in prison after pleading guilty to multiple counts of child cruelty, including repeatedly locking one of his six children in a chest freezer. The sentencing, handed down by Judge Elma Sheahan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on Tuesday, concludes a case described by an investigating garda as one of the worst she had encountered in a decade of child protection work.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the anonymity of his children, subjected the six children – two boys and four girls – to years of neglect and abuse between 2016 and 2020. Conditions in the family home were described as filthy and cold, with gardai and social workers documenting the presence of rodents, flies and faeces during visits. The children themselves were consistently described as small, pale, dirty, and inadequately clothed.

The court heard harrowing details of the abuse endured by the oldest boy, who was seven years old when the children were taken into care in January 2020. He was routinely denied food, locked in various rooms including his bedroom, a downstairs bathroom, a closet, and a functioning chest freezer. The man also attempted to suffocate the boy and repeatedly held his head underwater during baths, according to court testimony.

The children, now aged between six and 14, are currently living in three separate foster homes. Victim impact statements were read to the court, detailing the lasting physical, emotional, and psychological effects of the abuse. The statements, delivered by the children themselves – including a 13-year-old boy via videolink – and their foster carers, highlighted struggles with trust, food security, and academic performance. A recurring theme was the children’s distress at being separated from one another.

“You hated me for some reason. Told me I wasn’t part of your family. I don’t recognize why you were so cruel to me,” the 13-year-old boy stated in his impact statement. His 14-year-old sister added, “No one helped us.” The foster mother of the youngest girl, now six, reported that the child frequently asks why she was not loved as a baby and why her parents were “so mean” to them.

The man’s then-partner and the children’s mother received a sentence of two-and-a-half years in 2025 after pleading guilty to one count of child neglect. The man had initially been scheduled to stand trial on the charges, but entered guilty pleas following a proposal accepted by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Even as he also faced three counts of sexually assaulting the oldest girl and two boys, the DPP entered a nolle prosequi on those charges during the sentencing hearing. He has 20 prior convictions, primarily for minor public order offenses.

Defense counsel, Timothy O’Leary SC, stated that his client takes full responsibility for his actions and expressed remorse, acknowledging he should have been a better father. Mr. O’Leary also noted that the man had undergone drug treatment. However, Judge Sheahan emphasized the “repeated nature of the terrible cruelty perpetrated” on the vulnerable children, and the profound breach of trust inherent in the abuse. She noted the aggravating factors of exposure to inappropriate sexual behavior and drug employ within the home, with family funds diverted to substance purchases instead of basic necessities.

The case underscores the challenges faced by child protection services in Ireland. RTE.ie reported on the sentencing, highlighting the severity of the offenses and the lasting impact on the victims.

The children’s future remains uncertain as authorities navigate the complexities of reunification and long-term care, leaving the sibling unit fractured and their emotional recovery ongoing.
