Man Detained After Clash Near Poland's Constitutional Tribunal

Man Detained After Clash Near Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal

October 18, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Piotr W., arrested on October 16, faces a prosecution request for a one-month temporary arrest following an incident involving police legitatimization attempts, a foot chase, and a physical altercation that injured a female officer.

Demonstration Outside the Constitutional Tribunal and the Initial Police Confrontation

Friday marked another day of heightened tension around the Constitutional Tribunal headquarters in Warsaw. Police officers approached a man acting nervously near the gathering, attempting to verify his identity. According to the Komenda Stołeczna Policja, the individual refused to provide his personal data or identification documents. Instead of complying with the lawful request to exhibit identification, the man sprinted away from the officers. He fled toward a building located on Marszałkowska Street near Aleje Szucha and Plac Unii Lubelskiej.

Foot Chase and Altercation at Marszałkowska Street

Officers pursued the fleeing individual into the Marszałkowska Street building, where the situation escalated sharply. The suspect exhibited both passive and active resistance during the pursuit. Inside the structure, the man behaved aggressively and physically assaulted an interveining policewoman. The attack caused a head injury to the officer, requiring her immediate transport to a hospital. Police also noted that bystanders inside the building hindered the operation by ignoring commands to maintain a safe distance. During a subsequent search, authorities discovered a knife in the possession of the detainee.

Lawyers and Police Dispute Detainee Medical Condition

The condition of the detained man sparked immediate dispute between his legal representatives and law enforcement agencies. Ordo Iuris released a statement on behalf of the detainee claiming that medical personnel at the hospital failed to perform necessary examinations, such as a computed tomography scan, and provided no neurological consultation. The statement quoted the detainee describing severe headaches and visible injuries. However, the Komenda Stołeczna Policja formally denied reports circulating online that the man sustained a cut wound to his head. Police subsequently released a five-minute bodycam video showing the initial refusal to identify, the sudden flight, and the chaotic moments inside the Marszałkowska Street property.

Prosecution Charges and the Court Request for Detention

Following the conclusion of police procedures at the Warsaw Metropolitan Police headquarters, authorities transferred the detainee to the Prokuratura Rejonowa Warszawa Śródmieście. Prosecutor Anna Osypiuk formulated formal charges against the suspect. Bartosz Malewski, an attorney representing the detained man, stated via the platform X that the prosecution charged the suspect with forcing police officers to abandon their duties and violating the bodily integrity of officers, with one instance involving the threat of life loss or severe health impairment. Piotr W. refused to testify and did not plead guilty to the accusations, though he provided an extensive personal statement to his defense counsel regarding the timeline of his detention.

Late Saturday evening, Piotr Antoni Skiba, spokesperson for the Prokuratura Okręgowa w Warszawie, confirmed that procedural actions with the suspect had concluded. The prosecution submitted a motion to the District Court for Warsaw-Śródmieście requesting a one-month temporary arrest. The measure is designed to secure court-psychiatric examinations because the suspect consistently refused to provide personal and residential data from the beginning of the case, creating a substantiated risk of flight and procedural obstruction. During the Saturday evening proceedings, the suspect suddenly lost consciousness and fell to the floor, prompting the immediate dispatch of an ambulance to the prosecution offices, as noted by defense lawyer Magdalena Prządka-Leszczyńska.
