Man charged over murder of Joseph McEvoy in Dublin – The Irish Times

Dublin Murder Suspect Charged, Appears in Court

Following the fatal attack on **Joseph McEvoy** in Dublin on Monday morning, a suspect has been charged and appeared before the Courts of Criminal Justice on Tuesday afternoon. The case highlights the ongoing tensions in the Clondalkin area.

Arrest and Court Appearance

The suspect, a man in his 40s, was detained at a Dublin Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. This allowed Gardaí 24 hours to question him before either releasing him or bringing charges. He appeared in court from 4:30 PM.

Feud Escalation

The murder of **Joseph McEvoy**, 34, is believed to be a major escalation in an ongoing feud between two groups of young men and teenagers. This rivalry has been marked by violence for approximately two years.

Past attacks connected to the feud have involved petrol bombings, stabbings, and attempted murder. Gardaí are concerned that **Mr. McEvoy’s** death could intensify the conflict. As of 2023, research indicates that retaliatory violence is a significant factor in escalating feuds (RAND Corporation).

Details of the Attack

**Mr. McEvoy**, a father of two from Greenfort Avenue, Clondalkin, was attacked at a residence in Shancastle, Clondalkin, reportedly with a machete or similar weapon. He was not known to be involved in organised crime or the feud itself.

Possible Motives

Gardaí believe a young associate of **McEvoy** had been previously targeted in the feud. It’s thought that **Mr. McEvoy** may have been perceived as a vulnerable target by the opposing faction.

Previous Feud-Related Violence

One of the more serious incidents targeted a close associate of convicted drug dealer **John Gilligan**. However, **Gilligan**, 73, currently resides in Spain and is not involved in the ongoing violence in Dublin.

Nature of the Feud

The feud, despite multiple investigations and charges related to previous attacks, continues across Ronanstown, Clondalkin, and Lucan. The violence includes arson attacks on vehicles and homes, machete assaults, on-street beatings, and non-fatal shootings.

In some instances, young men on motorbikes have chased rivals, cornering and severely beating them while bystanders watched. Footage of these incidents has been shared on social media, further exacerbating tensions.

Tit-for-Tat Incidents

**Mr. McEvoy’s** murder occurred amidst a series of retaliatory incidents in the early morning hours, a pattern typical of the feud over the past two years. These incidents included a car arson on Glenfield Avenue, Clondalkin, the ramming of a vehicle in the Greenfort estate, and a petrol bomb attack on a house in Shancastle.

Investigation

The location where **Mr. McEvoy** was found was sealed off for examination by the Garda Technical Bureau. Although alive when Gardaí and paramedics arrived, **Mr. McEvoy** was pronounced dead after being transported to Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown.

The Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist were notified, and arrangements were made for a postmortem examination. A senior investigating officer has been assigned to lead the investigation, and an incident room has been established at Lucan Garda station. A Garda family liaison officer is providing support to **Mr. McEvoy’s** family.
