Man Arrested After Child Struck by Car in Tokoroa Hit-and-Run

A man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run incident in Tokoroa that left a child injured after being struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle.

Police confirmed the arrest following a collision on State Highway 1 near the intersection with Tirau Road on the afternoon of April 5, 2025. The child, believed to be under the age of 10, was transported to Waikato Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and remains in stable condition.

Authorities said the driver fled the scene immediately after the impact but was located several hours later during a coordinated police operation involving roadblocks and public appeals. The suspect, a 32-year-old male resident of Tokoroa, was taken into custody without incident and is expected to appear in the Tokoroa District Court on charges including failing to stop after an accident and reckless driving.

Investigators are continuing to examine dashcam footage from nearby vehicles and witness statements to reconstruct the events leading up to the collision. No further arrests are anticipated at this stage.

The incident has prompted renewed calls from local residents for improved cycling infrastructure and reduced speed limits along the stretch of highway where the crash occurred. Community leaders have urged the Waikato District Council to prioritise safety reviews of the route, particularly near schools and residential access points.
