Malaysian Village’s Stunning Lamp Displays Celebrate Hari Raya Tradition
A Perak village is illuminating the approach to Hari Raya with the glow of traditional oil lamps, a practice that has become a celebrated annual competition and a vibrant display of cultural heritage. Jasmi’s family, residents of the village, have won the annual pelita panjut competition for the past four years, most recently taking home a prize of RM1,000 (US$250).
The pelita panjut tradition involves crafting and displaying intricately designed oil lamps, known as pelita, along streets and in front of homes. For Jasmi’s family, the process is a multi-generational effort, bringing together three generations in a shared commitment to preserving the custom. “This is the most enjoyable part. Without things like this, Hari Raya isn’t exciting or lively,” Jasmi said. “When we come home to the village from the city, One can really feel the Hari Raya atmosphere.”
Beyond the competitive aspect, the lamp displays have become a focal point of pre-Hari Raya festivities for the entire community. Residents, whether participating in the competition or not, decorate their homes, transforming the village into a showcase of creativity and tradition. The practice echoes a broader effort to maintain cultural traditions during the festive season, as reported by CNA.
While the RM1,000 prize is appreciated, Jasmi emphasized that the true reward lies in sustaining the tradition for future generations. The annual competition serves as a catalyst for community engagement and a reminder of the cultural significance of pelita in the celebration of Hari Raya.
