LOMBOK, Indonesia — A 57-year-old Malaysian man died after a fall on Mount Rinjani in Lombok, Indonesia, authorities reported Saturday.
The Incident
- Rennie Abdul Ghani, 57, fell while climbing Mount Rinjani on Saturday.
- The incident occurred in the Banyu Urip area,according to Mount Rinjani National Park authorities.
- Ghani was part of a group of 23 climbers and had begun his ascent on May 1.
Family’s Response
Mohd Rizman Mohd Khuzaimi, a local actor also known as Riezman Khuzaimi, confirmed the death. Ghani was Khuzaimi’s brother-in-law.

A family member identified as Yana said thay were informed of the incident around 8 p.m. Saturday, Malaysian time, noting that ghani fell around 1 p.m. Malaysian time.
One of Ghani’s children, who was in Medan, Indonesia, is traveling to Lombok to assist with arrangements.
Ghani’s Plans
Ghani, a resident of Setia Alam, Johor Baru, had told his family that this climb would be his last before focusing on running events. [1]

Mount Rinjani has seen other tragedies. In August 2022, an Israeli-born Portuguese trekker died after falling approximately 500 feet while taking a selfie near the peak. [3] The evacuation of the body took four days due to challenging terrain and unpredictable weather.
