Maja Chwalińska advanced to the quarter-finals of the WTA 125 Antalya tournament on Tuesday, defeating Adelina Lachinova 6-1, 6-3. The win provides a boost for the 24-year-old Polish player as she continues her pursuit of a place in the top 100 of the WTA rankings.
Chwalińska, currently ranked outside the top 100, began the match strongly, securing the first set 6-1 with an ace. Lachinova, a local player who received a wildcard entry into the tournament, attempted a varied game, but Chwalińska’s consistency proved decisive. Despite a slight dip in form in the second set, allowing Lachinova to reach 3-4, Chwalińska regained control and closed out the match.
The victory comes after a challenging start to the season for Chwalińska, who failed to qualify for the main draw of the Australian Open. Prior to Antalya, she reached the quarter-finals of a WTA 250 event in Cluj-Napoca and a dramatic semi-final loss at a WTA 125 event in Oeiras, Portugal, where she lost a third-set tie-break.
Currently, Chwalińska is approximately 180 ranking points away from reaching the top 100, a milestone that would significantly improve her opportunities to enter the main draws of Grand Slam tournaments. She has entered three WTA 125 events in March, including those in Antalya and another in Turkey, followed by a tournament in Croatia, in an effort to gain the necessary points.
In the quarter-finals, Chwalińska will face Despina Papamichail of Greece. The BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, a WTA 1000 event, begins soon, marking a transition to hard court tournaments before the clay court season. The tournament, held annually in Indian Wells, California, is often referred to as the “fifth Grand Slam” due to its high attendance and prestige. The Indian Wells Open is part of the WTA 1000 events on the WTA Tour and the ATP Masters 1000 events on the ATP Tour.
