Magnusson’s Late Goal Secures Edinburgh Derby Win for Hearts | Scottish Premiership
A late goal from substitute Tomas Magnusson secured a 1-0 victory for Hearts over Hibernian in a tightly contested Edinburgh derby at Tynecastle Park on Tuesday evening. The win extends Hearts’ lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership to six points, though Rangers have a game in hand.
Magnusson struck in the 88th minute, converting a low cross from Harry Milne to spark celebrations amongst the home supporters. The goal proved decisive in a match where both sides struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, according to reports.
Hearts manager Derek McInnes handed a first start to January signing Islam Chesnokov, while Frankie Kent replaced the suspended Craig Halkett. Hibernian made two changes to their starting lineup from their previous match, with Nicky Cadden and Kai Andrews coming in for Jordan Obita and Élie Youan.
The opening stages of the match saw Hearts begin brightly, with Landry Kaboré driving a shot just wide. Hibernian responded with a counter-attack, but Felix Passlack’s pass was overhit and a subsequent shot from Nicky Cadden was deflected away by Kent. Both teams found it challenging to establish sustained periods of possession or quality in the final third.
Chances remained limited throughout the first half. Chesnokov had an opportunity but was closed down by Hibernian goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger, while Alexandros Kyziridis shot over from outside the box. Hibernian threatened just before halftime when Martin Boyle saw a low shot saved by Alexander Schwolow.
The second half continued in a similar vein, with both sides battling for control. Harry Milne tested Sallinger with a low shot in the 53rd minute. Hibernian increased the pressure around the hour mark, but Kyziridis made a crucial intervention to cut out a dangerous delivery from Cadden, preventing Boyle from scoring.
Boyle had another opportunity in the 69th minute, firing a shot just over the bar from Cadden’s cross. Still, it was Hearts who ultimately found the breakthrough, with Magnusson’s late goal proving to be the difference.
The result leaves Hearts six points clear of Rangers, who are yet to play their game in hand, and nine points ahead of Celtic, who have two games in hand. Celtic are scheduled to play Livingston, while Rangers will travel to Motherwell on Wednesday.
