Madrid: Nearly 3,800 Daily Dental Health Check-ups in Primary Care

February 28, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Madrid’s regional government provided nearly 3,800 daily dental health consultations in 2025, according to data released Wednesday, as part of an ongoing effort to expand preventative care within the public healthcare system.

A total of 938,345 dental health appointments were completed throughout the year, averaging 3,739 per day, the Comunidad de Madrid reported. These consultations focus on prevention, early diagnosis, and follow-up care for patients of all ages, delivered through 86 Unidad de Salud Bucodental (USBD) units integrated into primary care centers.

Each resident of the region is assigned a dentist of record and can schedule appointments through their local health center or via the Tarjeta Sanitaria Virtual, the government stated. The USBD units are staffed by dentists, dental hygienists, and auxiliary personnel working in a coordinated manner.

The regional government has allocated 8 million euros to fund complex dental treatments for children under 16, as well as dentures, cavity treatments, and cleanings for residents over the age of 80, as part of the ‘Cerca de ti’ (Close to You) campaign. As of January, approximately 9,000 individuals have benefited from these subsidized services, which are delivered through agreements with the Colegio de Odontólogos y Estomatólogos de la Primera Región (First Region College of Dentists and Stomatologists).

Patients seeking these services are initially required to visit their primary care dentist for evaluation and referral to participating clinics when necessary. The Comunidad de Madrid also provides specific dental care for pregnant women, including dental check-ups, dietary advice, fluoride applications, and cleanings as needed.

Children between the ages of two and four are referred to the USBD units for initial screenings and risk assessments for tooth decay, potentially receiving preventative treatments such as fluoride varnish, sealants, or cleanings.
