Returning to the VMAs stage for her first performance at the awards in 23 years, 68-year-old Madonna opened the ceremony alongside Sabrina Carpenter. Madonna took home Artist of the Year and Best Album for Confessions II. Her other victories included Best Collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter for “Bring Your Love,” alongside Best Dance, Best Cinematography, Best Choreography, and Best Long Form Video for Confessions II – The Film.
Taylor Swift Makes History as Most-Awarded VMA Artist
Taylor Swift moved clear of Beyoncé, with whom she had previously been tied on 30 career wins, bringing her total to 33 VMAs. Swift secured Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia” and Best Direction for “Opalite,” while also receiving the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors to recognize her work behind the camera.
Accepting the award for Video of the Year, Swift dedicated the honor to the late Dolly Parton, describing the country music star as the “ultimate showgirl.” Swift also premiered the self-directed video for her new single, “Patient Zero,” during the ceremony, featuring Irish actor Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson.

BTS led international categories by winning Song of the Year for “Swim,” as well as Best K-Pop and Best Group. Additional category winners included Sienna Spiro as Best New Artist, LISA featuring Kentaro Sakaguchi taking Best Pop for “Dream,” Cardi B featuring Kehlani securing Best Hip-Hop for “Safe,” and Bruno Mars winning Best R&B for “I Just Might.”
Olivia Rodrigo claimed Best Alternative for “the cure,” Bad Bunny won Best Latin for “NUEVAYoL,” and Ella Langley took Best Country for “Choosin’ Texas.” Ariana Grande secured Song of the Summer and Best Visual Effects for “hate that i made you love me,” while Sabrina Carpenter won Best Editing for “House Tour” and PinkPantheress plus Zara Larsson claimed Best Art Direction for “Stateside.”
Nirvana received the Video Vanguard Award, with surviving members Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Pat Smear accepting the honor on stage.
