Mac Pro: A 40-Year Legacy Beyond 2023 | Apple History

March 30, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

The discontinuation of Apple’s Mac Pro line, reported last week, extends far beyond the end of a single product cycle. Whereas framed by some as a simple market correction, the move represents the culmination of a 40-year lineage of professional-grade Macintosh computers, tracing back to the earliest iterations designed for demanding creative workflows.

Introduced in 2006, the Mac Pro was explicitly positioned as the successor to the Power Mac G5, inheriting its role as Apple’s most powerful and expandable desktop offering. However, the transition from PowerPC to Intel architecture necessitated a shift in branding, rendering the “Power” taxonomy obsolete. The Mac Pro, didn’t emerge as a new creation, but rather as a continuation of a legacy stretching back through the Power Mac G4, G3, Power Macintosh 9600 and 9500 series, the Macintosh Quadra line, and the original Macintosh II family.

The Power Mac G5, released in June 2003, was a landmark machine. Apple marketed it as the world’s first 64-bit desktop computer, and it was the first Apple desktop to utilize an anodized aluminum alloy enclosure. Initial configurations started at $1,999 (equivalent to approximately $3,500 in 2025), and featured 1.6 GHz PowerPC G5 processors. Later models offered dual-processor configurations and faster clock speeds, peaking at 2.7 GHz. The G5 towers, while larger than their G4 predecessors, were designed to accommodate the complex cooling systems required by the more powerful processors.

The original G5 models offered a range of expansion options, including three PCI slots and three PCI-X slots, allowing professionals to customize their systems with graphics cards, storage controllers, and other specialized hardware. Configurations included up to 8GB of DDR SDRAM and 160GB Serial ATA hard drives, paired with SuperDrives for optical media. Connectivity options included FireWire 800 and 400 ports, USB 2.0, and 1.1 ports, and Gigabit Ethernet.

Apple continued to refine the Power Mac G5 with subsequent generations, introducing dual-core processors and increased memory capacity. However, the transition to Intel processors in 2006 marked a fundamental shift in Apple’s hardware strategy. The Mac Pro, based on Intel Xeon processors, retained a similar tower enclosure design for seven years, demonstrating the longevity of the G5’s industrial design.

Technical specifications for the Power Mac G5 varied across configurations. Early 1.6 GHz models included 256MB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM and NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra graphics with 64MB of DDR SDRAM. Later 1.8 GHz models featured 512MB of PC3200 DDR SDRAM. Dual-processor 2.0 GHz models offered 512MB of PC3200 DDR SDRAM per processor. All models shipped with Mac OS X v10.2 “Jaguar” and a suite of Apple software including iLife.

The discontinuation of the Mac Pro line leaves a gap in Apple’s product portfolio, particularly for professionals who require a highly customizable and expandable desktop workstation. Apple has not yet announced a direct replacement for the Mac Pro, leaving the future of its professional desktop strategy uncertain.
