AI Spots LymeDiseaseAfterYearsofDismissedSymptoms
WHITELEY, UK – A British man, Oliver Moazzezi, says artificial intelligence led to a Lyme disease diagnosis after years of frustrating medical consultations where his symptoms were attributed to anxiety and other conditions. moazzezi, an IT consultant for Microsoft 365, had been experiencing tinnitus, which gradually worsened and was accompanied by high blood pressure, extreme fatigue, and muscle spasms.
“I felt like no one really wanted to understand or analyze everything that I was trying to explain to people quite eloquently,” Moazzezi told the BBC. He recounted feeling like “a hypochondriac” as doctors struggled to pinpoint the cause of his declining health.
Driven to find answers, Moazzezi turned to AI, inputting his symptoms. The AI suggested Lyme disease, prompting him to seek a test from a private doctor, which came back positive. He believes he was bitten by a tick brought into his home near Whiteley, southern United Kingdom, by his cat approximately three years ago.
Moazzezi is now undergoing treatment and reports a reduction in some of his symptoms, including tinnitus. He credits AI with optimizing his research, stating he instructed it to consult verified medical sources without specifically mentioning Lyme disease.
The NHS integrated Care Board for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight emphasized the importance of professional medical consultation for diagnosis and treatment. “We encourage anyone concerned about their health to consult a qualified clinician or visit 111 online to find out where to recieve the most appropriate care,” a spokesperson said. However, the board also acknowledged the potential of AI, stating they are “continu[ing] to study how technology can help clinicians care for their patients safely.”
