Philippines: Luzon Communities on Alert for Landslides and Flooding Amid Heavy Rainfall

Manila, Philippines – Communities and local government units (LGUs) across Luzon are urged to remain vigilant for potential rain-induced landslides, flash floods, and debris flows as a low-pressure area (LPA) intensifies the southwest monsoon, known locally as “habagat.” The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) issued Geohazard Advisory 1 on Thursday, flagging high-risk areas across the region.

MGB Issues Geohazard Warning for Luzon

The MGB, under the Department of Habitat and Natural Resources (DENR), announced that an LPA located 140 kilometers east northeast of Aparri, Cagayan, is expected to bring widespread rains to Luzon. This advisory prompts provincial, city, municipal, and barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils to activate preparedness measures, especially in areas identified as high-risk.

Did you Know? The Philippines experiences an average of 20 typhoons each year, making disaster preparedness a critical aspect of community safety.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical services Management (PAGASA) forecasts heavy to intense rainfall in Cagayan, Batanes, Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, Ilocos Norte, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, Metro Manila, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Benguet, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Tarlac, Pampanga, bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, and Batangas.PAGASA warns that rainfall could be more intense in mountainous regions, exacerbated by already saturated soil from recent rains.

Areas at High Risk

The MGB’s latest data indicates that 252 barangays across 12 provinces in Luzon and 412 barangays in Metro Manila are highly susceptible to rain-induced landslides and flooding from July 3 to 6.Cagayan and Isabela provinces alone have over 200 barangays flagged for potential hazards. The MGB notes that Metro Manila faces a lower threshold for severe flooding due to inadequate drainage and high surface runoff.

Pro Tip: Familiarize yourself with your local evacuation routes and emergency contact details. Keep a “go-bag” ready with essential supplies.

Vulnerable Barangays

While not all provinces mentioned in DOST-PAGASA advisories are included in the MGB’s current list, all areas are advised to maintain preparedness and monitor future geohazard advisories for any sudden changes in weather conditions. Residents are urged to heed local warnings, stay updated on weather forecasts, and be ready to evacuate if necessary to ensure their safety during this period of enhanced monsoon rains. What steps has your community taken to prepare for potential flooding? How can individuals better protect themselves and their families during severe weather events?

Understanding monsoon Season in the Philippines

The Philippines experiences two distinct monsoon seasons: the southwest monsoon (Habagat) from June to September and the northeast monsoon (Amihan) from November to February. The Habagat, intensified by weather systems like low-pressure areas and typhoons, brings important rainfall, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides. Understanding these patterns is crucial for effective disaster preparedness and mitigation efforts.
