Luke Dashjr Removed as Bitcoin BIP Editor Following BIP 110 Dispute
Dashjr Ousted from BIP Editor Role Amid Ordinals Dispute
Bitcoin developer Luke Dashjr was officially removed from his position as a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) editor on August 11, 2026. The ouster followed an escalating community dispute regarding his handling of BIP 110 and its potential to cause a minority chain fork.
Developer Mark Erhardt initiated the removal motion on August 9, citing a lack of daily editorial contributions and procedural friction. Dashjr characterized the decision as an abuse of power in a post on X, according to Coindesk coverage.
The Battle Over BIP 110 and Network Bloat
The governance conflict centers directly on BIP 110. The proposal was designed to establish a separate Bitcoin chain implementing strict constraints on non-financial data storage like images and text.
This type of on-chain usage gained significant traction following the 2023 introduction of the Ordinals protocol. According to reporting from Bitcoin.es, the community viewed Dashjr’s role in advancing and subsequently withdrawing the proposal as a source of considerable uncertainty and a lack of transparency.
Operational Friction and Sabbatical Announcement
Mark Erhardt noted that Dashjr had contributed fewer than 1 percent of BIP editor comments since April 2024. Furthermore, the pull request action executed during the dispute marked his first merge since May 2024.

Amid these administrative tensions, Dashjr announced he is taking a sabbatical from his role as chief technology officer and chairman of mining group Ocean to focus entirely on core Bitcoin and open-source projects.

A New Framework for Core Development
The removal of Dashjr marks a definitive step toward formalizing a more open and participative decision-making framework for Bitcoin’s core development cycle.
