Luigi Mangione Pleads Guilty and Admits Killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson

August 14, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Guilty Plea and Assassination Admission in Manhattan Federal Court

Luigi Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court on Friday to stalking charges related to the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, while simultaneously admitting to the shooting death of the executive. Mangione’s admission, delivered in a written statement, outlines a premeditated plot to assassinate the 50-year-old CEO as an act of retaliation against the health insurance industry.

Deconstructed Mechanics of a Premeditated Plot

During the federal court hearing, Mangione detailed the mechanics of his plan. He stated he used a 3D printer to construct a gun equipped with a silencer and a magazine before traveling to New York City.

According to Mangione’s testimony, he gained access to the location of the UnitedHealthcare annual investor conference by emailing company leadership while posing as an investor at a firm managing $50 billion in assets.

The Courtroom Confession and Life Sentence Exposure

“I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died,” Mangione told the court. “When I did so, I understood that my actions would place him in fear of death or serious bodily injury.” The defendant faces up to life in prison for the federal stalking charges.

State-Level Double Jeopardy and Legal Strategy

The plea has prompted questions regarding the status of the pending state-level murder case against Mangione. Legal experts, including former federal prosecutor David S. Weinstein, noted that under New York state law, a resolution in a federal proceeding can sometimes provide grounds for a motion to dismiss state charges based on double jeopardy protections.

While federal and state governments generally maintain the authority to prosecute for the same conduct independently, New York law allows for specific applications of double jeopardy when a prior prosecution for the same conduct concludes with a guilty plea or trial resolution. Mangione’s legal team, led by Marc Agnifilo and Karen Friedman Agnifilo, has previously navigated complex pretrial motions, including a failed effort to resolve the case earlier this year.

Anonymous Juries, Psychiatric Records, and Trial Timelines

Prior to Friday’s hearing, the state-level proceedings saw significant activity. This included a ruling by judge Gregory Carro that the jury for the upcoming murder trial would remain anonymous.

The defense team had previously signaled a strategy centered on a psychiatric defense, asserting that Mangione was “extremely emotionally disturbed” at the time of the incident. In response to the defense’s strategy, the court ordered the production of psychiatric records and the unsealing of records from a prior confidential hearing.

Although prosecutors initially sought the death penalty in the federal case, U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett blocked that pursuit in January.

The state trial remains scheduled for next month, while the federal case is slated for a trial early next year, pending further judicial review of the implications of Friday’s guilty plea.
