A first-half goal from Nico Reniero and a resolute defensive performance secured a 1-0 victory for Club Deportivo Lugo against Athletic Club B at the Estadio Anxo Carro on Sunday, propelling the Galician side provisionally into the upper echelons of the Primera Federación – Group 1 table.
Lugo’s head coach, Yago Iglesias, described the win as “deserved,” emphasizing the team’s growing maturity and competitive edge. “We’ve been wanting to position ourselves in these places for a long time,” Iglesias stated after the match, while cautioning that the league standings at this stage of the season remain “anecdotal.”
The victory builds on recent positive momentum for CD Lugo, who, according to reports, are aiming to transform the Anxo Carro into a fortress. A modernization project for the stadium, valued at €3 million, was launched earlier this month, representing a significant investment in the club’s infrastructure and future, according to a press release from CD Lugo. The last major renovation of the stadium occurred in 2000.
Iglesias underscored the team’s development, both tactically and mentally, highlighting their ability to close out tight matches – a feat that had previously eluded them. “Winning games of this profile… speaks to maturity and competitive evolution,” he said. He tempered expectations, however, stating his focus is on the final ten matches of the season, where the club’s objectives will be definitively determined.
Looking ahead to their next fixture, Iglesias employed a striking analogy, stating, “Next week we travel to the dentist, we have to go.” He was referring to a challenging away match against a currently unnamed opponent. “We’re going to work all week to go to the dentist and be the ones pulling out their teeth,” he added, signaling a clear intent to compete aggressively and secure a positive result despite the difficulty of the task.
Iglesias also spoke of a broader project underway at the club, emphasizing the importance of building a strong foundation for sustained success. He pointed to improvements in ball possession, attacking presence, and defensive solidity as evidence of the team’s progress. “It looks good and we are excited about what’s to arrive,” he affirmed, with his sights set on a strong finish to the season.
The connection between the team and its supporters, particularly during the closing stages of the match against Athletic Club B, was also highlighted by Iglesias. He reiterated the club’s ambition not only to challenge for a playoff spot but to establish a lasting presence among the league’s frontrunners.
Club Deportivo Lugo was founded on July 8, 1953, following a merger between SG Lucense and CD Polvorín, and currently plays its home games at the Estadio Anxo Carro, which has a capacity of 7,114, according to Wikipedia.
