Lucky Dip Criminal Caught and Bitten by Garda Dog After High-Speed M50 Chase
A man was apprehended by Gardaí following a high-speed pursuit on the M50 motorway in Dublin, during which he was bitten by a police dog after attempting to evade capture on foot.
The incident occurred when officers attempted to stop a vehicle on the M50, prompting the driver to flee at high speed. The chase continued until the suspect abandoned the vehicle and ran into nearby undergrowth. Gardaí deployed a police dog unit, which tracked and detained the individual, resulting in a bite to the suspect’s lower leg during the apprehension.
The suspect, whose identity has not been formally released by authorities, was taken into custody and transported to a medical facility for treatment of the dog bite before being transferred to a Garda station for questioning. He is expected to face charges related to dangerous driving, failure to stop for police, and evading arrest.
Gardaí confirmed that the police dog involved in the incident is a trained operational animal and that its leverage was in accordance with standard procedures for apprehending suspects who flee on foot. The dog was checked by its handler after the incident and returned to duty.
The M50, a key orbital route around Dublin, is frequently monitored by Garda traffic units due to high volumes of commuter and commercial traffic. Pursuits on the motorway are relatively uncommon but are treated as high-risk operations due to the potential danger to other road users.
No injuries were reported to officers, members of the public, or other road users during the chase. The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) has been notified of the incident as per standard protocol when a police dog bites a suspect during an arrest.
The case is now under investigation by local Gardaí, with a file expected to be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) regarding potential charges. No court date has been scheduled at this time.
