Lucero Sánchez López Says El Chapo Wanted to Be Singer

October 3, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Based on available reports, Lucero Sánchez López noted that Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán fantasized about leaving drug trafficking behind to become a famous singer in Mexico. Guzmán is currently serving a life sentence in the United States following his 2019 conviction on drug-trafficking, guns, and conspiracy charges.

Sánchez López reportedly maintained a relationship and shared a child with Guzmán. Court documents cited by the New York Post also confirmed they shared a son.

According to Sánchez, Guzmán wanted to step away from the criminal enterprise and pursue a career in the music industry. She stated that his younger dream was to join Don Cruz Lizárraga’s group, Banda El Recodo. “He used to say his dream was to be a singer — to join Don Cruz Lizárraga’s group, Banda El Recodo. That had always been his dream.”

Cartel Leaders Contemplated Exiting the Drug Trade

Sánchez indicated that Guzmán did not want his sons to become involved in drug trafficking. He considered passing responsibility to someone outside his family circle. She also noted that Guzmán and cartel co-founder Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada contemplated moving on from the drug trade entirely.

Following his guilty plea regarding offenses tied to directing the Sinaloa cartel, 76-year-old Zambada received a life sentence in an American court this past July.

Sinaloa Fractures Following Arrests and Sentences

Guzmán, now 69, remains incarcerated in the U.S. The cartel once led jointly by Guzmán and Zambada has fractured into competing factions since their arrests and prosecutions. These factions include groups associated with the men’s sons. Their removal has been followed by violence in the Mexican state of Sinaloa.
