Leyna Nguyen Records Match-High Kills as Loyola Chicago Fights Past Five Sets
The Saturday afternoon match featured intense back-and-forth momentum swings in nearly every frame. Loyola struggled to contain George Mason’s offensive attack in the opening set, dropping a narrow 25-23 decision after George Mason broke a late tie at 20-19. The Ramblers immediately rebounded in the second stanza behind an explosive .390 attack percentage, securing a 25-23 win powered by seven kills from Leyna Nguyen.
George Mason reclaimed the match advantage in the third set, taking another tightly contested 25-23 battle where neither side held a lead larger than four points. Refusing to fold, Loyola put together its most dominant stretch of the afternoon in the fourth set. The Ramblers never trailed, racing out to an 11-point cushion to claim a convincing 25-14 victory and force a decisive fifth frame.

The final set saw Loyola grab a late 12-11 lead before George Mason rattled off the match’s final four points, capitalizing on three late Rambler attack errors to seal the 15-12 win. Loyola head coach Amanda Berkley noted after the match that the team must improve its side-out efficiency moving forward.
It was definitely a battle today. Leyna had a great match offensively. She found a way to get the job done and was electric and so fun to watch. George Mason has an outside hitter who can run a fantastic back row attack, which really hurt us today. That said, I am proud of the team for coming back and fighting. We have to be able to side out more efficiently moving forward.
