Louvre Robbery: Stolen Jewels Valued at €88 Million, Investigation Ongoing
paris – The Louvre Museum in Paris was the target of a robbery resulting in the theft of eight jewels, with an estimated value of €88 million, authorities announced Tuesday. Despite the notable monetary loss, prosecutors emphasized the incalculable nature of the past damage, stating the value of the stolen items is dwarfed by the cultural importance of the missing pieces.
According to Paris prosecutor laure Beccuau, speaking to RTL, even melting down the jewels wouldn’t yield a comparable sum to the historical loss. Investigators are currently pursuing leads in the case, with approximately one hundred personnel dedicated to locating the suspect and recovering the stolen items. The jewels stolen are described as having colored stones easily cut and resold on the secondary market, according to French historian Vincent meylan in an interview with RTL. Notably, larger, more recognizable diamonds like the Regent were not taken.
The robbery prompted assurances from French Minister of Culture Rachida Dati, who told the National Assembly that the Louvre’s security systems ”worked,” and an administrative investigation will provide a transparent account of the events of Sunday. The Louvre management also defended the security upgrades implemented in December 2019, stating the replaced windows represented a “considerable advance” over outdated equipment.
the museum remained closed Tuesday as the investigation continues.the estimated €88 million loss does not include costs associated with damage to the museum, the room itself, or the expense of the Louvre’s closure.
