Lost Ark names Lee Byung-tak director as Jeon Jae-hak steps down
Lost Ark director Jeon Jae-hak is stepping down from his role after leading Smilegate’s massively multiplayer online role-playing game for approximately three years, stepping aside to take responsibility for recent content difficulty miscalculations.
Kim Gang-Sun Apologizes for Extreme Raid Difficulty
Smilegate held an official live broadcast titled “On Air” on October 29 to address ongoing community concerns regarding game operations and content balancing. During the broadcast, Kim Gang-sun appeared alongside outgoing leadership to apologize directly for the studio’s failure to properly tune the Extreme Raid difficulty, acknowledging that the content fell short of player expectations.
Addressing the decision behind his own appearance on the previous live stream instead of Jeon, Kim explained that management believed having the former director step in directly was the best way to address mounting pressure. He conceded that this approach was a miscalculation and apologized for the choice. Kim subsequently announced Jeon’s departure from the director position.
Lee Byung-Tak Becomes Third Director of Lost Ark
Jeon decided to step down after struggling to establish a long-term direction for the game and accepting accountability for failing to meet user expectations. His departure coincides with the upcoming eighth anniversary of Lost Ark next week, after which he will begin the handover process. Jeon will remain within the development organization, shifting focus to raid development and other hands-on tasks to support ongoing creation.
Lee Byung-tak will assume the role of third director for the title. Jeon Jae-hak also remaining in the development field ensures the transition maintains existing development experience and organizational continuity while shifting to a new leadership structure. Lee outlined an optimistic outlook during the broadcast, stating that addressing current issues incrementally and consistently introducing engaging content will help restore player satisfaction. He added that the team has been preparing winter update content since the summer, aiming to deliver enjoyable experiences for the player base.
Future Outlook
This personnel change marks a significant juncture as Lost Ark embraces new development leadership while undertaking the task of recovering trust with users. With Jeon Jae-hak remaining in practical development, the future path will be critically shaped by the direction Lee Byung-tak presents and how successfully the winter update meets player expectations.
