Los Angeles Housing Crisis Forces Residents to Sleep in Cars

Los Angeles Housing Crisis Forces Residents to Sleep in Cars

November 3, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

In the West Coast metropolis of Los Angeles, securing a stable place to live has turned into a daily trial as soaring rents, climbing interest rates, and a severe housing shortage force residents to sleep in cars or find unconventional shared housing, franceinfo reported. Official figures show that 20,000 people currently sleep inside their vehicles across the city.

Waiting in Parking Lots After Work

When night falls over Los Angeles, a queue forms at the entrance of a designated municipal parking lot. Men and women arrive in their vehicles to spend the night, most of them working jobs during the day. “Sometimes, I arrive late after work and I’m going to park here,” Steven said. This young father has lived in his station wagon for several months, setting up a sunshade across the windshield to block out the morning light and keep out of sight from passersby.

A chaotic divorce and a job loss pushed him to pack his belongings into his car to start over. A small portable fan serves as his only luxury. “It’s pretty comfortable. I have a real mattress and it’s better than quite a few people who sleep on the street. I’m pretty lucky. I just got a little money, but not enough to find an apartment, that’s for sure,” Steven said. On the night franceinfo visited, 29 vehicles used the parking lot, welcomed without charge by an organization reporting a surge in demand.

“It’s the mirror of the cost-of-living crisis. We prefer to know them here in safety rather than seeing them sleep on the street where they often take fines, which can make them lose their vehicle,” Matthew Tecle of the association Safe Parking LA said.

Living on Disability Pension in a Car

Across various neighborhoods, motorhomes, vans, and packed sedans line curbsides and parking lots. Tom has lived in his vehicle with his pets for four years, surviving on a disability pension. “Landlords ask you to prove that you earn the equivalent of two months’ rent and a deposit every month. So, for a 2,500 dollar apartment, you have to earn at least 6,000 dollars in salary just to move in,” Tom said.

Average rents for a one-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles hover around the equivalent of 2,000 euros. Finding an affordable home requires dealing with a market where tenants face steep financial barriers and intense competition.

Renting a Bed by the Night Near Hollywood

Near Hollywood Boulevard, Elvina Beck runs a loft-style apartment operating as a new type of shared housing managed by the company Podshare. The space contains roughly twenty beds and shared living areas. For 55 dollars a night, the environment resembles a youth hostel, catering to adults struggling to secure a traditional lease.

“In an apartment, your water or electricity bills fluctuate. Here, it’s a fixed cost and that makes it possible to keep your budget. They can pay by the night or by the week, not necessarily by the month,” Beck said.

A 47-year-old actor working odd jobs pays the equivalent of 1,000 euros per month to stay there after previously sleeping in his car. “My sister told me: ‘Look, it’s nice and close to Hollywood, to your job.’ So I decided to try it. At first, I thought I’d stay a handful of nights. I’ve been here almost a year,” he said.

Searching for a Home Amid a 250,000-Unit Shortage

The city requires at least 250,000 additional housing units to relieve the strained market. Ciera Harding searched for a home from mid-June onward, viewing multiple properties every weekend before securing a small two-bedroom apartment for the equivalent of 1,400 euros. “I was looking for an apartment since mid-June. I visited two or three every weekend. Among them, one cost less, great! But did I want to live with rats and cockroaches? Probably not,” Harding said.

Like many Americans, Harding also pays 1,000 dollars monthly toward 140,000 dollars in student loan debt. She voted for Donald Trump based on promises to reduce living costs. “I know he never really tells the truth, but I still expect a president to give us a little hope. And since his arrival, he hasn’t given us any at all,” Harding said.

High Interest Rates Block Young Buyers from Purchasing Homes

Homeownership has grown equally out of reach as interest rates doubled over a decade to exceed 7 percent. Borrowing 250,000 dollars over 30 years means repaying 373,000 dollars solely in interest.

Tina LaMonica, a Los Angeles real estate agent, converted her former garage into an independent studio with a bathroom and kitchenette five years ago. She built the space to accommodate her adult daughters, who earn steady salaries but cannot afford an initial property purchase locally. “I am sad to see that for young active people like my daughters, it has become almost impossible to buy a house here,” LaMonica said. Asked if she could buy property in the current market, she replied: “No. With the rise in interest rates and our income, our file would no longer be accepted by the banks.”

Leaving the California Dream Behind

Los Angeles residents purchase homes later in life than those in any other major American city, typically past the age of 40. With the cost of living outpacing local wages, the city has lost more than 300,000 residents over a five-year period as families and workers relocate away from the region.
