Lorena Wiebes Wins Stage 1 of Tour of Britain Women with SD Worx-Protime Masterclass

August 20, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Lorena Wiebes of SD Worx-Protime won stage one of the 2026 Lloyds Tour of Britain Women on Wednesday, August 19, in Cockermouth, Cumbria. The Dutch sprinter secured the victory in a bunch finish after a 158.9km circuit, claiming the green jersey and marking her eighth stage win across five editions of the race, according to Britain Today News.

SD Worx-Protime Tactical Control and the Sprint Finish

The opening stage was characterized by a calculated approach from SD Worx-Protime, which utilized a multi-pronged strategy to neutralize attacks before committing to a sprint. Christian Kos, the team’s sport director, stated that the team initially waited to see if a breakaway could decide the stage before deciding to bring Wiebes to the finish in the optimal position. According to Cyclingnews, SD Worx-Protime maintained five riders in a reduced peloton of 32, including Lotte Kopecky, Mischa Bredewold, Julia Kopecký, and Steffi Häberlin.

The team’s numerical advantage created a tactical stalemate in the final 30km. When SD Worx-Protime riders joined opposing attacks, other teams often ceased pushing, fearing they would simply lead out a teammate of Wiebes. This dynamic was evident 12km from the finish when Häberlin and Bredewold joined Aude Biannic (Movistar) and Riejanne Markus (Lidl-Trek) in a front group. Cyclingnews reports that Markus was unwilling to commit to the move because Bredewold possesses a superior sprint.

The final 5km were contested on narrow roads, which Wiebes noted made repositioning within the reduced peloton difficult. The lead-out was executed by Häberlin and Julia Kopecky, followed by Lotte Kopecky and Mischa Bredewold. Wiebes launched her sprint with 200 metres remaining to take the win. Chiara Consonni of Canyon-SRAM finished second, and Great Britain’s Josie Nelson of Picnic PostNL took third, according to Britain Today News.

Course Demands and General Classification Impact

Organizers designed the Cockermouth loop as the longest stage of the five-day event. Britain Today News reports the route featured an elevation gain exceeding 1,900 metres, making it more demanding than the flatter routes used in previous years. The circuit tracked the Solway Firth coastline through Whitehaven, Workington, and Maryport before returning inland.

Early aggression included a solo effort by Austria’s Leila Gschwentner (Smurfit Westrock), who was caught 25km into the stage. A later breakaway featuring 18-year-old Arabella Rosalie Blackburn (Handslang Alba Development) and Audrey De Keersmaeker (Picnic PostNL) established a gap of nearly three minutes before being neutralized. Per Britain Today News, the current general classification standings place Consonni four seconds behind Wiebes, with Karlijn Swinkels (UAE Team L’Imad) in third and Mischa Bredewold in fifth.

Outlook for Stage Two

The race continues on Thursday, August 20, with a 110.5km route from Clitheroe to Blackpool. Cyclingnews reports the stage is expected to suit a sprint finish, concluding near Blackpool’s Mirror Ball. Chiara Consonni indicated that Canyon-SRAM may attempt a long-range breakaway in the coming days to counter the dominance of the SD Worx-Protime lead-out train.

Wiebes enters the second stage with significant momentum, having already secured victories at this year’s Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift and the Giro d’Italia Women, according to Britain Today News. Her ability to maintain positioning on technical, narrow roads will be critical as the peloton moves toward the coast.
