Lord of the Rings: New Movie ‘Shadow of the Past’ Announced – Details
Warner Bros. Discovery announced today a new film project set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, titled Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past. The announcement, timed to coincide with Tolkien Reading Day – commemorating the defeat of Sauron on March 25th – marks a further expansion of the studio’s renewed commitment to the franchise.
The film will be produced by WingNut Films, in association with Spartina Industries, and penned by Phillipa Boyens, Peter McGee, and Stephen Colbert. Shadow of the Past is set fourteen years after the events of The Return of the King, following Frodo’s departure to the Undying Lands. The narrative will center on Samwise Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck, and Pippin Took as they revisit the initial stages of their journey, while simultaneously following an independent quest undertaken by Sam’s daughter, Elanor.
According to a press release, Elanor’s quest will involve uncovering a previously unknown secret from the early days of the War of the Ring, a revelation that nearly jeopardized the entire mission to destroy the One Ring. The storyline draws inspiration from five chapters within The Fellowship of the Ring that were not fully explored in Peter Jackson’s film adaptations, specifically focusing on the Hobbits’ encounter with Tom Bombadil while evading the Black Riders.
The concept for Shadow of the Past originated with Stephen Colbert, who developed the idea over two years ago in collaboration with his son. Colbert shared in a statement released by Warner Bros. That it “took a few years to scrape my courage into a pile to give you a call… you liked it enough to talk to me about it,” referring to his initial pitch to Jackson. Colbert’s involvement in the project became more substantial following his departure from The Late Demonstrate With Stephen Colbert, announced last year, allowing him to dedicate more time to scriptwriting this summer.
While casting details remain unconfirmed, the film’s premise suggests the potential return of Sean Astin, Dominic Monaghan, and Billy Boyd to reprise their iconic roles as Sam, Merry, and Pippin. Warner Bros. Has not yet issued any statements regarding casting decisions.
The announcement of Shadow of the Past follows the recent development of another Tolkien adaptation, The Hunt for Gollum, currently in pre-production and featuring Kate Winslet in an undisclosed role. These projects signal a significant investment by Warner Bros. Discovery in expanding the cinematic universe of Middle-earth, following the studio’s acquisition by Netflix, as reported by TheOneRing.net.
