Long Island shops host DIY craft classes

by Priya Shah – Business Editor

LONG ISLAND, ‍NY – Artisans and aspiring crafters‌ on Long island have a new avenue for creative expression, as Hitch,⁢ a shop in ⁣Bay Shore, hosts a series of DIY workshops alongside its retail ⁢offerings of handmade goods. The classes, held in conjunction with the neighboring ‌Bestea tea lounge, provide instruction from local artists and a chance to connect with the makers behind the products.

Hitch owner Joe DeBello launched the classes to foster a more personal connection between customers and‌ the creative process. Attendees learn skills ranging from candle-making to blanket knitting, all while enjoying complimentary tea and treats. The workshops aim to go beyond simple instruction, offering insight ⁣into the artists’ backgrounds ⁣and inspirations.”They get to know them, why they started, their background: the who, what, where and whys of‍ the artist,so it becomes⁤ more personal,” DeBello said.

The shop itself features a curated selection of handmade items, described by DeBello as “anything that you can think of that’s handmade.” Classes are held next door at Bestea, further enhancing the experience⁤ with a ⁢relaxing ‌atmosphere. Recent and upcoming workshops include⁢ a “Mean Girls” themed DIY Burn Book night on⁣ Oct. 3 ($58), a chunky blanket class on Oct. 8 ($98), a “Hocus Pocus” spell craft and movie night on Oct. 10 ($68), and a jean pocket frame workshop on Oct. 22 ($58).
