Rediscovered Mesophotic Coral Reef Off Benin Challenges West African Marine Data

A deep-ocean coral reef presumed dead for nearly sixty years off the coast of Benin has been rediscovered and documented by researchers, revealing an active ecosystem living roughly 165 feet below the surface. According to findings published in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science by a team of oceanographers led by Gérard Zinzindohoué at the Institut de Recherches Halieutiques et Océanologiques du Bénin, the formation sits on the Gulf of Guinea continental shelf and hosts multiple species of coral and fish.

Hardware Deployment and Visual Verification

To inspect the rough seabed at depth, the researchers relied on an underwater drone alongside the National Geographic Exploration Technology Lab’s Deep Sea Camera System, which operates similarly to an autonomous sub-surface trail camera.

“I still remember seeing those first images. It was a mix of excitement and disbelief, because after all this time thinking about this reef, suddenly there was something real in front of us,” Zinzindohoué stated.

Because the reef sits in a mesophotic zone where sunlight penetration is severely restricted, the formation does not grow as a single continuous barrier. Instead, it appears as fragmented colonies spread across rocky patches of the continental shelf. The camera systems documented eight different types of coral alongside eight distinct fish species, including:

  • Guinean angelfish (Holacanthus africanus)
  • Golden African snappers (Lutjanus fulgens)
  • Monrovia doctorfish (Acanthurus monroviae)
  • Blackbar soldierfish
  • West African goatfish
  • Three-banded butterflyfish
  • Two species of damselfish

Implications for Regional Marine Infrastructure

The discovery underscores significant blind spots in coastal West African marine cartography. While historical records suggested this specific ecosystem was barren, the lack of modern data collection tools left the area largely unmonitored for half a century.

Zinzindohoué emphasized that additional fieldwork is required to map the full extent of the habitat, noting that historical records indicate the imaged portion represents only a tiny fraction of a potential 25-mile structure running parallel to the coast of Benin. Without comprehensive diving and sampling programs, researchers remain limited in assessing the precise health and resilience of these deep-water environments.

Future Research Directions

Future iterations of this research depend entirely on securing expanded grant support for physical expeditions. For now, the rediscovered reef serves as proof that regional ecosystems possess higher resilience and biodiversity than legacy records indicated.
