Liverpool’s Title Defence in Crisis: Brighton Defeat Raises Champions League Concerns

March 21, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Brighton & Hove Albion defeated Liverpool 2-1 on Saturday, marking the reigning Premier League champions’ 10th league defeat of the season and deepening concerns about their Champions League qualification hopes.

Danny Welbeck scored twice for Brighton at the Amex Stadium, while Liverpool struggled to find form despite a recent Champions League victory over Galatasaray. The loss is Liverpool’s 10th in the Premier League this term, a figure only reached seven times previously by defending champions.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot acknowledged the defeat was a significant setback. “Of course now looking at the league table, this loss hurts a lot and it should hurt us a lot,” Slot said, according to ESPN. He pinpointed earlier dropped points as crucial factors in their current position, citing a late equaliser conceded against Wolves and a stoppage-time goal allowed against Tottenham Hotspur as particularly damaging.

The match was further complicated by injuries. Hugo Ekitike, one of only two available senior strikers, was substituted early in the first half. Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker were already absent from the squad. Slot described Ekitike’s injury as a “big blow” for both the player and the team, noting the limited number of games remaining to secure Champions League football. “I think the players, the fans, we all know there are only eight games to travel to qualify for the Champions League and every game you have to miss is something you are upset about,” Slot told NBC Sports.

Liverpool’s form has been inconsistent since a strong start to the season, winning only nine of their last 26 league games following an initial run of five consecutive victories. Slot attributed some of this to the challenges of balancing Champions League commitments with domestic fixtures, noting a pattern of poor results following European matches. “It’s clear we’ve lost a lot of points after playing in Europe,” he said.

Despite a significant £450 million ($602M) investment in player transfers last summer, Slot conceded that Liverpool’s squad depth is a concern. He acknowledged the expectation that such spending would automatically translate to success, but also highlighted the club’s unique transfer model, which involves substantial player sales. “It makes complete sense if you win the league last season and you spent £450m that the expectations are high,” Slot stated. “But still it’s not good enough no matter how much excuses I can come up with – it’s still not good enough for the position we’re in right now.”

Liverpool currently occupy the fifth spot in the Premier League, which is projected to grant a Champions League place due to the league receiving an additional qualification spot. Yet, sixth-placed Chelsea have a game in hand and could overtake them.
