Liverpool manager Arne Slot is preparing for a demanding week with back-to-back matches against Wolverhampton Wanderers, first in the Premier League on Tuesday and then in the FA Cup on Friday, both at Molineux Stadium.
The Liverpool boss confirmed that Florian Wirtz is likely to miss both upcoming matches, anticipating his return to fitness sometime next week. “The game tomorrow is probably too soon and maybe the weekend as well,” Slot stated during a press conference on Sunday, according to the BBC.
Slot also addressed the challenge of reintegrating Jeremie Frimpong after injury, acknowledging the need to balance the player’s physical condition with the importance of the games. “We play three games in seven days. Those things you have to take into account, especially with players back from injuries. But we also recognize the importance of every game. I prefer to have this problem – managing how many minutes I give him than to see him with the medical staff doing recovery,” he said.
The double-header against Wolves comes as the Premier League side prepares for a busy March, which includes a Champions League Round of 16 tie against Galatasaray, starting with a trip to Istanbul next week. A league match against Tottenham Hotspur follows on March 15th, before the return leg against Galatasaray at Anfield.
Slot expressed his enthusiasm for the Champions League schedule, noting the relative infrequency of matches against the same opponents. “I like it in the Champions League since you don’t play each other that much so [facing Galatasaray is] a bit new and then the second time you can prepare your team even better,” he explained.
Liverpool will face a Wolves side currently struggling in the league, with just 13 points and facing potential relegation. Despite Wolves’ position, Slot anticipates a “difficult” match, emphasizing the need to focus on securing Champions League qualification. The Straits Times reported Slot as being wary of a “resurgent Wolves” as Liverpool chase a Champions League spot.
Cody Gakpo’s recent goal against West Ham was also a topic of discussion. Slot clarified that he evaluates players on more than just goals scored, noting the importance of defensive contributions. “Attackers are also judged on if we preserve a clean sheet,” he said. He also acknowledged that Gakpo may have been overthinking decisions recently, potentially impacting his form, but dismissed the idea that this indicated a loss of confidence.
Slot also addressed a controversial incident involving a red card issued to Maxence Lacroix of Crystal Palace and a similar situation involving Marc Guehi of Manchester City, pointing out a perceived inconsistency in officiating. “The only difference is Mo Salah is pulled by the shirt by Guehi and Lacroix is a hand on the shoulder,” Slot stated.
