SalahS 95th-Minute Penalty Secures Late Victory for Liverpool at Burnley
Turf Moor, Burnley – Mohamed Salah converted a penalty in the 95th minute to hand Liverpool a 1-0 victory over 10-man Burnley on Sunday, continuing the Reds’ perfect start to the premier League season. The win marks Liverpool’s fourth consecutive victory, all decided by goals scored in the final 10 minutes or later – a Premier league first.
Burnley, reduced to ten men after a red card, frustrated Liverpool for much of the match, holding the Reds scoreless for the first time in the league in exactly a year, since a 1-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest.
Despite a strong attacking record of eight goals in their opening three games, Liverpool struggled to break down burnley’s defense, creating few clear-cut chances. Manager Arne Slot admitted, “It was challenging for us to find an opening and a few times we were close. If we had scored the game may have been open but because we didn’t thay did the same thing.”
Salah’s late penalty moves him ahead of Andrew Cole into outright fourth place in the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorers chart with 188 goals, trailing only Wayne Rooney (208), Andy Cole (187), and Alan Shearer.
Liverpool have won their opening four Premier League matches for only the third time, previously achieving the feat in 2018/19 and 2019/20 – the latter being their title-winning season.
Burnley manager Scott parker expressed frustration with the late decision, stating, “Tough, really tough. Immensely proud of the group… I am just gutted for them it was decided by a penalty.”
Burnley have now received eight red cards in the premier League since the start of the 2023/24 season, equaling Arsenal and Liverpool for the most in the competition, despite spending last season in the Championship.
Liverpool next face Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, followed by the Merseyside derby against everton at Anfield on Saturday. Burnley will look to rebound next weekend when they host Ange Postecoglou’s Nottingham Forest.
