Liverpool Lose to Brighton: Premier League Standings 2025/2026
Brighton & Hove Albion defeated Liverpool 2-1 at the Amex Stadium on Saturday, marking Liverpool’s second defeat in their last three Premier League matches and further complicating their pursuit of a Champions League qualification spot.
Danny Welbeck scored both goals for Brighton, capitalizing on Liverpool’s defensive vulnerabilities. Milos Kerkez scored for Liverpool, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit. The result leaves Liverpool in fifth place in the Premier League table with 49 points from 31 matches, two points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot attributed the loss to a confluence of factors, prominently citing the ongoing injury crisis within his squad. “What went wrong started off with the lead-up to this game, as so many times happened this season,” Slot said in a post-match press conference. He specifically mentioned the absences of Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker, compounded by an early injury to Hugo Ekitike during the match. “After two minutes Hugo Ekitike [is] out, so that has happened so many times to us this season and again now.”
The defeat comes after a frustrating run of results for Liverpool, including a 2-1 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers on March 3rd and a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on March 15th. Slot acknowledged the team’s recent struggles to secure victories, stating that the loss “hurts a lot” and should be a source of concern for the team.
Adding to Liverpool’s concerns, goalkeeper Alisson Becker is confirmed to be out during the upcoming international break, with his return date uncertain. Ekitike’s injury, described as a dead leg, is less severe, and Slot indicated he could be available for their next match.
The loss also intensifies the pressure on Liverpool to secure Champions League football, with Chelsea lurking closely behind in sixth place with 48 points from 30 games. Chelsea is scheduled to play Everton on Sunday, presenting an opportunity to close the gap on Liverpool.
Slot also alluded to the club’s transfer policy as a contributing factor to their current difficulties, noting that Liverpool frequently sells players, unlike many other clubs who primarily focus on acquisitions. “No one in England is used to the fact that there are also clubs that are selling players,” Slot stated. He emphasized that the club’s model of selling significant talent while also making substantial investments is not widely understood or accepted. The club reportedly spent £450 million ($602M) in last summer’s transfer window, but also sold players for approximately £300 million ($401M).
Brighton’s victory came after a short period of rest, having played their previous match just 62 hours prior to the Liverpool game. Slot noted that Brighton’s approach of playing an intensely physical game early on contributed to Ekitike’s injury. However, he also acknowledged that Brighton deserved the win, particularly in the second half, where they outperformed Liverpool.
