LIV Golf Cancels Season-Ending Team Championship Amid Restructuring Plans

August 15, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

LIV Golf has canceled its $40 million season-ending Team Championship scheduled for August 27-30 at The Cardinal at St. John’s in Michigan, according to reports from The Telegraph and CBS Sports. The move follows the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund’s (PIF) decision to end its financial backing of the league after investing over $5 billion since 2022.

Financial Instability and the Shift to LIV 2.0

This is the second tournament LIV Golf has scrapped in 2026, following the cancellation of a $30 million event in New Orleans this past June, per CBS Sports. The league’s current financial state is precarious; while CEO Scott O’Neil stated on August 5 that a signed agreement with a lead investor is in place and approved by the board, the identity of this investor remains undisclosed. The transaction is expected to close in September.

The transition to a leaner operating model, dubbed “LIV 2.0,” involves several drastic reductions to sustain the league. According to Golf.com, the 2027 schedule will shrink from 14 events to 10, split evenly between domestic and international venues. Furthermore, the standard $30 million purses will be reduced to a lower, unspecified figure. In a move to incentivize player retention during this period of instability, O’Neil claims the new structure will make players majority equity holders in the league, a move he describes as a first for a major global sports league.

CBS Sports reports that several players told The Telegraph they are unsure if the $40 million in team prizes for the canceled Michigan event will still be paid out. This uncertainty is compounded by reports that the league may consider filing for bankruptcy, which would potentially transform players owed contract money into unsecured creditors.

Strategic Realignment and Tour Alliances

The DP World Tour has warned its members who also play in LIV that conditional release agreements for 2027 are highly unlikely, according to Sport Industry Group. This puts players at risk of heavy fines and tournament suspensions if they continue with the breakaway series.

The league’s isolation increased in July when the PGA Tour and DP World Tour formed a strategic alliance with the Asian Tour, according to the BBC. This partnership established immediate pathways from the Asian Tour to the DP World Tour, effectively neutralizing a key pipeline LIV Golf had utilized since 2022 to recruit top international talent.

While major champions like Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed have already rejoined the PGA Tour through a returning member program, others remain non-committal. When questioned at LIV Golf UK, Legion XIII captain Jon Rahm declined to share his 2027 plans. Conversely, Bryson DeChambeau, whose contract expires after the 2026 season, has frequently expressed his commitment to the league, per CBS Sports.

Operational Changes and the 2026 Finale

With the Michigan event removed, the 2026 campaign will now conclude with the LIV Golf Indianapolis tournament, scheduled for August 20-23 at The Club at Chatham Hills. This event will serve as the final competitive opportunity for players to secure their standing before the league attempts its September financial transition.

According to the BBC, LIV Golf moved from its signature 54-hole format to a traditional 72-hole format starting this season.

Metric Previous LIV Model LIV 2.0 (2027 Proposed)
Annual Events 14 10
Standard Purse $30 Million Reduced (TBD)
Ownership Structure PIF Backed Player Majority Equity
Round Format 54 Holes 72 Holes

LIV Golf’s survival now hinges on the September finalization of its lead investor terms. If the transaction fails, the league may face a total collapse or a forced merger.
