Luke littler Claims Grand Slam of Darts Title, Overtakes Luke Humphries as World No. 1
London, UK – November 17, 2024 – Luke Littler has successfully defended his Grand Slam of Darts title, defeating compatriot Luke Humphries 16-11 in a thrilling final and concurrently claiming the world number one ranking. The 18-year-old’s victory marks his eighth major title, equaling Humphries’ career total.
Littler’s ascent to the top spot was secured by reaching the final, displacing Humphries who had held the ranking since January 2024 following his World Championship win.He then solidified his position with the championship win.
“It was a strange game for me. But it was always clear that it would be a close game. I was actually just behind for a long time. The game changer was the 20th leg,” Littler said post-match.
Humphries,nicknamed “Cool Hand Luke,” initially remained competitive,but Littler pulled ahead at 11-9,completing a 160 checkout after Humphries missed opportunities on the doubles. Littler proved unstoppable from that point.
Earlier in the day,Littler confidently stated,”I am the best in the world,” after a 16-9 semi-final victory over Dutchman Danny Noppert.Humphries reached the final after defeating Welshman Gerwyn Price 16-13. Following his defeat, Humphries vowed, “I will win the World Cup.”
Littler’s impressive run includes titles at the World Championship,Premier League,and World matchplay.He will enter the PDC World Darts Championship at alexandra Palace (December 11th – January 3rd) as the top seed, with a potential final showdown against Humphries in the expanded 128-player tournament.
From a German perspective, Martin Schindler, Ricardo Pietreczko, Niko springer, and former World Cup semi-finalist Gabriel Clemens will carry national hopes in London.Clemens remains the only German professional to reach a World Cup semi-final, while Schindler became the first German to break into the world’s top 16 this year.
