What visitors are saying
Took a short detour home from Winterton-on-Sea to visit here and I'm so glad I did!nnThe layby outside, which I imagine gets a little muddy at times, had room for 2-3 cars to park.nnSt Mary's church fell into disuse in the 17th Century at some stage after the parish was merged into another and the church itself had served as a chapel of ease for the nearby hall.nnFor a ruin it seems to be remarkably well cared for. The lack of tree roots on the path, nave and bell tower floor make it fully accessible, while the ivy seems to frame the building beautifully without obscuring interesting features or tantalising clues helping you imagine elements of the interior that have long been lost.nnDesipte folklore aledging the oak tree growing in the middle of the nave is the wooden leg of a vengeful buried witch, on my visit the place was bathed in peace and beauty in the early morning sun. It's well worth a detour to see.
Beautiful ruins, very atmospheric. Definitely worth exploring and a photo opportunity.
Wow. This place was truly gorgeous. A hidden treasure found only by those who seek it and boy am I glad we did!! Its only small so only takes 5-10 minutes to explore but the sights are so serene. I felt like i was in a fantasy land or away in my dreams! The true art of nature has carefully twisted and turned its away around the ruins of St Marys Church, and the legend of the Witches Leg just made this place more surreal! 🌿nnDefinitely worth a visit, however there is no parking so you do have to walk a bit to reach the space.
A gem of a ruin, a definite hidden beauty. The church only has its exteria walls, which sre mostly covered by plants. There is a beautiful tree in the centre of the church and surrounding all around it. You can easily miss this as you drive.. Or even walk past.nParking is on the road only and you have to pick your way through on narrow paths. It a very peaceful and wonderful place to visit.
Eerie yet beautiful peaceful yet mystical historical yet timeless.nEnter into the past as you visit this place of spiritual connection to times gone by.nnLearn the story about the witch of east Somerton, do you dare summon her soul?nnThere is something about this place I really like and draws me back, would it you??
Interesting old ruined church ! Imagine it’s quite eerie when the sun isn’t shining like the day I visited. You can walk into the main bit of the church but the surrounding part has been fenced off, I assume for safety reasons
