Lisbon, Portugal – A tourist tram derailed in Lisbon on Friday, resulting in teh deaths of 15 people and leaving dozens injured, Portuguese authorities have confirmed. The accident occurred on the historic Gloria tram line,a popular route for tourists.
European Union Secretary General Ursula von der Leyen expressed her sadness on X, stating, “I was saddened by the news of the rail… I wish our condolences to the families of the victims.”
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the incident as a ”terrible accident” in a statement on X, while Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani conveyed solidarity with the victims following a meeting with his Portuguese counterpart.
European Union Council President Antonio Costa, a native of Lisbon, offered his condolences, learning of the accident promptly after landing in Paris. He noted the Gloria tram held particular importance for him personally.
