Lisbon Cable Car Accident Leaves At Least 15 Dead, 18 Injured
LISBON, Portugal – A tragic accident involving the “Glory Lift” cable car in lisbon has resulted in at least 15 fatalities and 18 injuries, including 5 serious injuries and 13 minor injuries, one of whom is a child, according to Ugal emergency medical service.
The injured have been transported to hospitals for treatment, Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas stated. Authorities confirm some of the deceased are foreign nationals and that several individuals were rescued from being trapped at the scene.The cable car, popular with tourists, has a capacity of 43 passengers. The number of people on board at the time of the accident remains unclear.
Mayor Moedas has declared three days of city mourning,expressing “the deepest condolences” to the families and friends of the victims. Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa conveyed his “deep regret” over the deaths and injuries,offering condolences and support to the families and urging a swift investigation into the cause.Pedro Bogas, chairman of Lisbon tram company Carris, described the day as “very sad” and emphasized the company’s commitment to a thorough investigation, noting their “strict regulations” and ”excellent professionals.”
EU Executive Committee Chairman Ursula von der Leyen expressed sadness over the “derailment” and extended condolences to the victims’ families.
