Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino Confirm Romy and Michele Sequel for Hulu
Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino are officially reprising their iconic roles as Michele Weinberger and Romy White in a sequel to the 1997 cult classic Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. Currently in production in Los Angeles under 20th Century Studios, the project will premiere exclusively as a Hulu Original.
Production Underway in Los Angeles
According to The Hollywood Reporter, filmmaker Tim Federle is directing the project, while original screenwriter Robin Schiff has returned to pen the script. The sequel’s production was confirmed earlier this month when 20th Century Studios shared an image of Kudrow and Sorvino in director chairs marked “Romy and Michele 2.”
On-set sightings in Los Angeles confirm the return of several key cast members. Page Six reports that Alan Cumming is back as Sandy Fink, the high school nerd turned millionaire. Joining him are returning cast members Janeane Garofalo as Heather Mooney, Camryn Manheim as Toby Walters, and Julia Campbell as Christie Masters. The ensemble is expanding with new additions, including Keegan-Michael Key, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, Patrick Warburton, and Nathan Lee Graham, though specific plot details regarding these new characters remain strictly confidential.
The Evolution of a Cult Classic
The original film, a Touchstone Pictures production released by Disney’s Buena Vista Pictures, earned $29 million during its 1997 theatrical run. While it was considered only a modest success at the time, the film gained significant traction over the following decades, becoming a fixture in popular culture. Its transition to a streaming-exclusive sequel on Hulu and Disney+ marks a shift in how the franchise reaches its audience compared to the original theatrical release.

The path to a sequel gained momentum following the 2022 SAG Awards, where Kudrow and Sorvino reunited to present an award together. Following that appearance, discussions intensified. By January 2025, reports confirmed that the stars were in final negotiations with Federle attached to direct. For fans of the original, the return of the iconic Jaguar from the first movie—reported by TMZ—serves as a tangible link between the two eras of the story.

Looking Ahead: The Streaming Sequel Landscape
With costume designer Mona May—who also worked on the 1995 film Clueless—returning to define the visual identity of the sequel, the production aims to maintain the aesthetic charm that made the original a staple of 90s cinema.
