DETROIT - The Detroit Lions significantly boosted their playoff hopes with a decisive 44-30 victory over the Dallas Cowboys at Ford Field on Thursday night. Jahmyr Gibbs delivered a standout performance, rushing for three touchdowns and tying a Lions franchise record previously held by Barry Sanders – who was in attendance – for most touchdowns (47) before the age of 24. Jared Goff complemented the rushing attack with 309 passing yards.
The win improves Detroit’s record to 8-5, increasing their playoff probability to 45 percent according to The Athletic’s playoff simulator. prior to the game, the Lions had only a 30 percent chance of reaching the postseason. A win in three of their final four games is projected to secure a playoff berth.
Dallas, now 6-6-1, saw its three-game winning streak snapped. Their playoff chances have diminished, currently standing at 40 percent if they win their remaining four games.
The Cowboys faced further setbacks with receiver CeeDee Lamb leaving the game in the third quarter with a concussion,despite contributing six catches for 121 yards.
Detroit’s defense recorded five sacks and forced three turnovers, while the offense operated efficiently throughout the contest. “There’s something about Detroit when pushed to the brink,” noted Lions beat writer Colton Pouncy. “It tends to hunker down and rise to the occasion.”
Cowboys reporter Jon Machota highlighted deficiencies in Dallas’s special teams and run defense, stating the run defense was its worst performance as acquiring Quinnen Williams.
