Lionel Messi Leads Inter Miami Past New England With Goal And Assist
Inter Miami Rallies Past New England Revolution Behind Messi and Berterame
Lionel Messi contributed a second-half assist and scored the winning goal as Inter Miami overcame a deficit to defeat the New England Revolution 2-1 on Sunday night. The result lifts Inter Miami into second place in the Eastern Conference with 16 wins, six losses, and 11 draws, passing New England by a single point with one regular-season match remaining. It also marks the club’s 10th road victory of the campaign, three more than any other team in the league.
Defensive Lapses and Second-Half Responses in Foxborough
Neither side broke the deadlock in a scoreless first half at Foxborough, Massachusetts, where goalkeepers Dayne St. Clair and Matt Turner anchored their respective defenses. St. Clair finished the night with three saves for Inter Miami, while Turner turned back three shots for New England. The home side struck first in the 53rd minute when Dániel Gazdag received passes from defenders Ilay Feingold and Peyton Miller, sending a right-footed shot past St. Clair. The sequence marked Gazdag’s second goal in 11 appearances this season, alongside the fifth assist for Feingold and the ninth for the 18-year-old Miller, both career highs.
Inter Miami leveled the score in the 69th minute. Messi and Telasco Segovia combined to set up Germán Berterame for a goal, bringing the match to 1-1. The strike marked Berterame’s 10th goal and 10th assist in his debut Major League Soccer season, while giving Messi his first goal contribution in three matches. In the 83rd minute, Messi secured the victory by scoring his league-leading 26th goal of the season. Segovia provided the assist, marking his career-high 12th in his second full season with the club.

Messi Leads League in Total Goal Contributions
With the result, Inter Miami moves to a 10-4-3 away record, while New England’s four-match win streak ends, dropping their home record to 11-4-2. Messi currently sits tied for the second-most assists in the league with 16 and leads all players in total goal contributions with 42. Earlier in the 2026 MLS season, Messi recorded his 20th goal and reached his 930th career goal with a free kick against San Diego at Nu Stadium. That earlier match saw San Diego open the scoring in the 12th minute through Anders Dreyer before Messi equalized before halftime with his 101st club goal for Inter Miami.
Both clubs conclude their regular-season schedules next Saturday. Inter Miami returns home to host Charlotte FC, while New England travels to face Orlando City.
