Lindsay Clancy Murder Trial Resumes With Testimony on Postpartum Mental State

August 18, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Testimony in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial resumed for a 15th day as the defense called witnesses to detail the Duxbury woman’s mental state before the January 2023 deaths of her three children, according to live court coverage. The proceedings in Plymouth Superior Court featured emotional statements from family members, including the defendant’s former mother-in-law, who testified that Clancy was begging for help with postpartum struggles prior to the tragedy, according to reporting by The Boston Globe.

Defense Focuses on Postpartum Mental Health

Clancy faces three counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Callan, who were strangled with exercise bands inside the family’s Duxbury home on January 24, 2023. She has pleaded not guilty and is pursuing an insanity defense, arguing that severe postpartum psychosis and heavy medication rendered her incapable of understanding her actions.

According to court reports from the Daily Mail, Clancy sat in a wheelchair in the courtroom, draped in a cream shawl and supported by medical personnel, highlighting the permanent paralysis she suffered after attempting suicide by jumping from a second-floor window immediately following the killings. Her defense team, led by attorney Kevin Reddington, contends that a combination of deep clinical depression and pharmaceutical intervention created a toxic mental state despite repeated requests for medical intervention.

Family and Witness Accounts

During the 15th day of the trial, testimony centered heavily on the defendant’s declining psychological health in the weeks leading up to the incident. According to The Boston Globe, Clancy’s former mother-in-law took the stand to describe her severe distress and repeated pleas for assistance. The trial has drawn national attention, contrasting Clancy’s background as a labor and delivery nurse with the acute mental health crisis documented by her defense.

Prosecutors argue that the killings were planned, citing internet search history and the fact that Clancy sent her husband, Patrick Clancy, out to pick up takeout while the attack occurred. While Patrick Clancy and other family members have offered insight into her deteriorating condition, the jury must ultimately decide the extent to which postpartum mental illness diminished her criminal responsibility.
