Liga MX: Atlante Pursuing Mazatlán Purchase, Potential Return to Mexico City
Mexico City – November 19, 2025 – atlante FC is in advanced talks to purchase Mazatlán FC, perhaps paving the way for the “Potros de Hierro” (Iron Colts) to return to Liga MX for the Apertura 2026 season, sources have told ESPN. This would mark AtlanteS return to the top flight after being relegated in the Clausura 2014.
Negotiations between Atlante, led by Emilio Escalante, and Grupo Salinas, the current operators of Mazatlán FC, have been ongoing throughout November. The plan centers around relocating the franchise from Mazatlán to Mexico City.
while Liga MX officials currently have no official knowledge of the discussions, Mazatlán FC’s directors have reportedly initiated conversations with the Government of Sinaloa regarding a potential franchise relocation.
Any change of venue requires approval from Liga MX club owners, and an announcement is anticipated following the owners’ assembly in May.
should the sale and relocation be approved, Atlante’s board of directors is considering the Azteca Stadium as a potential home venue.
