Liepaja Unveils Largest Wall Painting for 400th Anniversary

Liepaja,Latvia – In a vibrant festivity of Liepaja’s 400th anniversary,a monumental wall painting has been gifted to the city,marking the largest of its kind to date. The 200-square-meter artwork, titled “Sirmgalvis and Sea,” is the creation of renowned French street artist Aéro and is located at 2 Matrožu Street.
This notable public art installation is the ninth such contribution from Mikus and Marek Alberti, owners of the popular beach cafe “Red Sun Buffet.” Their initiative aims to make art accessible to everyone, believing street art to be a democratic and democratic art form.

Aéro’s “Sirmgalvis and Sea” series, inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s novel of the same name, began in 2020 in Morlaix, Brittany, France, and has since been featured in several French cities. This Liepaja mural marks the artist’s first “old man” depiction outside of his native France.
“This is the first ‘old man’ I draw outside my homeland, so I am especially happy that it is in Liepaja,” Aéro commented. “I like Liepaja. it’s special. It has a wind, a little harshness. I think this ‘old man’ here fits very well.”
This is not Aéro’s first contribution to Liepaja’s art scene.In 2024, the artist created the wall painting “My Country is my country” at 56 Krišjāņa Valdemāra street.Aéro’s public art is visible across France and much of Europe, embodying the essence of street art as an affordable and engaging medium for passers-by. He is recognized as part of a significant tradition in French street art, alongside influential figures like Blek Le Rat, a pioneer of stencil graffiti, and JR, known for his large-scale photographic murals.
