Liberty Field Hockey Ranked 8th in NFHCA Preseason Poll

August 26, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

The Liberty field hockey program enters the fall 2026 campaign ranked eighth in the nation, according to the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Preseason National Coaches Poll released by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association on Tuesday morning. This position marks the second highest preseason national ranking in program history, trailing only the 2022 squad that started at sixth.

Preseason Poll Standing and Historical Context

According to the official release from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, the national ranking places Liberty among the top 10 teams in the country for an 11th straight national poll, dating back to last year’s week one poll on September 9, 2025. Furthermore, the program has secured a spot as a nationally-ranked squad to start the year for the tenth straight time in which a preseason poll was conducted, as there was no preseason poll during the spring 2021 campaign.

The defending BIG EAST champion sits as one of two conference teams in the national preseason rankings, alongside No. 11 Connecticut, as reported by the athletic department. Liberty was also picked to finish first in the conference in the 2026 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

National Landscape and Strength of Schedule

Northwestern occupies the No. 1 spot in the preseason rankings following its 2025 national championship run. North Carolina follows at No. 2, Princeton takes No. 3, Harvard holds No. 4, and Virginia rounds out the top five.

Liberty’s schedule features seven matchups against teams appearing in the 2026 preseason poll. The slate includes:

  • No. 2 North Carolina (Home, October 11)
  • No. 5 Virginia (Home, September 11)
  • No. 6 Duke (Home, October 25)
  • No. 10 Miami (Ohio) (Home, September 19)
  • No. 11 Connecticut (Away, September 25)
  • No. 15 UMass (Neutral site at Maine, Saturday second game of season)
  • No. 20 Saint Joseph’s (Away, September 4)

Opening Weekend Logistics

The eighth-ranked Lady Flames open the 2026 season against Maine on Friday at noon. Following the opening weekend, the team returns to Virginia for its home opener on September 11 against No. 5 Virginia at 5 p.m.
