Lewitt MTP 5 Review: A New Stage Mic Challenging the Shure SM58?

by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Vienna, Austria – Lewitt Audio today launched the MTP 5, a new dynamic stage microphone designed to compete with industry standard models like the Shure SM58b. The microphone, available in both standard and switched versions, aims to deliver high sound quality, enhanced durability and superior feedback rejection for live performances.

According to Lewitt, the MTP 5’s tailored dynamic capsule provides exceptional clarity and high-finish response, capturing vocal nuances even as maintaining presence in a mix. The company emphasized the microphone’s ability to suppress harsh sibilance often found in other dynamic microphones.

A key feature of the MTP 5 is its optimized off-axis frequency response, designed to minimize bleed from other stage instruments, such as drums and brass. This is achieved through a highly efficient cardioid polar pattern, allowing for louder stage monitor levels without feedback. The microphone’s construction prioritizes robustness, with a full-metal mesh, grille, and body intended to withstand the demands of touring and live performance.

Lewitt has similarly addressed a common issue with stage microphones – “cupping” – where performers partially cover the microphone head. The MTP 5’s capsule position and a metal ring around the mesh are designed to prevent signal degradation when the microphone is cupped. The capsule is also suspended in rubber to minimize handling noise, and the integrated windscreen is washable for hygiene.

The MTP 5 is intended for a wide range of applications, including vocals, speech, broadcasting, podcasting, and instrument recording. The switched version includes a toggle for muting the microphone, making it suitable for talkback situations, emceeing events, and panel discussions.

The Lewitt MTP 5 is available now, priced at $109 / £89 / €109 for the standard version and $119 / €119 / £99 for the switched version. Each microphone includes a microphone clip, transport bag, and foam windscreen. Lewitt Audio has established itself as a competitive brand in the microphone market, with its products currently used by artists including Stevie Wonder, Kehlani, Justin Bieber, Bad Bunny, Duran Duran, Robbie Williams, Lil Yachty, BTS, Dave Mustaine, and Sabrina Carpenter.

The microphone’s specifications include a dynamic, moving coil transducer with a pressure gradient operating principle and a cardioid polar pattern. It features a gold-plated 3-pin XLR connector, a sensitivity of 2 mV/Pa, an internal impedance of 280 Ω, and dimensions of 48mm in diameter and 183mm in length. The microphone weighs 336g.
