Lewis Hamilton: Sam Bird Sees ‘Spark’ Return After Chinese GP Podium
Lewis Hamilton’s resurgence in Formula 1 continued at the Chinese Grand Prix, prompting praise from former Formula E driver Sam Bird, who believes the Ferrari driver has rediscovered his competitive edge.
Bird, speaking on the latest episode of The Chequered Flag podcast, described Hamilton’s performance as a sign that “his spark is back,” following a third-place finish in the race. This assessment comes after a particularly aggressive Sprint race earlier in the weekend, where Hamilton engaged in close battles with fellow British drivers Lando Norris and George Russell.
The Sprint race saw Hamilton create a rapid start from fourth on the grid, immediately challenging Norris for position into Turn 2. He then overtook Russell at Turn 9, taking the early lead. Bird went so far as to characterize Hamilton’s move on Norris as “bullying,” noting how the Ferrari driver squeezed Norris wide, forcing him to concede the position.
Despite the initial aggression, Hamilton’s race was impacted by tyre wear, causing him to fall behind teammate Charles Leclerc. Both Ferrari drivers ultimately secured podium finishes, with Leclerc finishing second and Hamilton in third, benefitting from a late safety car period triggered by a crash from Nico Hulkenberg.
The Sprint race itself was shortened to 19 laps due to timing constraints related to track repairs needed for the main Grand Prix event. Russell ultimately secured victory, finishing less than a second ahead of Leclerc.
The praise for Hamilton’s performance extends beyond the track, with observers noting a renewed intensity and determination from the seven-time world champion. The Chinese Grand Prix marks a significant step in what many are hoping will be a championship-contending season for Hamilton with Ferrari.
