Let’s Jest a Little: Lebanon News & Commentary

March 20, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

A promotional poster offering a 30% discount to displaced persons was observed in the Hamra district of Beirut, prompting discussion among residents, according to a report published Friday by L’Orient-Le Jour.

The observation comes amid escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, with recent Israeli strikes targeting southern Lebanon. On Thursday, the region around Tyr experienced heavy fire, resulting in over 1,000 deaths since the commencement of hostilities, L’Orient-Le Jour reported. A journalist was injured in a recent Israeli strike in southern Lebanon, describing the attack as a “deliberate attempt to reduce [them] to silence.”

Political maneuvering continues as Walid Joumblatt, a prominent Lebanese political figure, has indicated openness to negotiations with Israel, but only in conjunction with the involvement of U.S. Mediator Amos Hochstein. Simultaneously, Lebanese President Najib Mikati has appealed directly to former U.S. President Donald Trump to intervene and halt the ongoing conflict within Lebanon.

The Lebanese justice system is also navigating complex cases. The investigation into the Abou Omar affair has been closed and transferred to the public prosecutor. A first arrest warrant has been issued for an individual affiliated with Hezbollah, related to prohibited military activities. The assassination of Mohammad Cherri, a journalist with al-Manar, has drawn widespread condemnation.

Three U.S. Lawmakers have called on Lebanon to repeal its “antinormalization” laws, which prohibit contact with Israel. Raggi has urged Arab nations to support Aoun’s initiative for direct negotiations with Israel. Students at the American University of Beirut (AUB) are actively engaging in solidarity efforts to assist communities affected by the ongoing conflict.

Scarlett Haddad, writing for L’Orient-Le Jour, reports that Hezbollah appears to be adopting a more radical stance. In southern Lebanon, residents in predominantly Christian areas are pursuing a strategy of peaceful resistance. Ziad E., identified as a hairdresser by day, is also described as an expert in identifying the sounds of warfare.

Diplomatic efforts continue, but the situation remains volatile. No immediate resolution to the conflict appears forthcoming and the fate of the negotiations proposed by Aoun remains uncertain.
